Heathrow Baggage Handlers to Get Help from RFID

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I saw this story on BBC America the other night and then again at Silcon.com.

“Heathrow airport is trialling RFID tracking technology that will help make the nightmare of lost and mishandled luggage a thing of the past for travellers.

Passengers flying to and from Dubai out of Terminal 3 with Emirates airline will have a tiny chip embedded in their luggage tags.

Airport operator BAA hopes this chip could save airport staff hours of time by slashing the number of suitcases with tags which need checking manually – a laborious process that is currently required for tens of suitcases at T3 every day.

The RFID chips, containing passenger names and routes, eliminate many of the problems of using traditional barcoded tags.”

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I saw this product at Globalspec.ethernetmodem-M2M blog 21408
It combines 5 Ethernet ports with a telephone modem.

SIXNET’s ET-5MS-MDM is a 5 Port Remote Access Switch that combines an industrial telephone modem with an industrial Ethernet managed switch, allows the user to access an Ethernet network from any remote location over standard telephone lines.

From the Globalspec news item:

The ET-5MS-MDM was designed to be rugged, reliable, real-time and secure.

M2M Releases New Field Data Collection Service

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

M2M Data Corporation today announced the release of its new field data collection service called Intelligent Data Acquisition (iDA™). The new iDA™ service uses M2M software running on a laptop or PDA to allow operators, technicians, pumpers and engineers to collect field data for upload to M2M’s iSCADA® remote monitoring and control service. iDA™ is an economical alternative to M2M’s satellite-based telemetry for the collection of data for which it is not necessary to provide real-time updates.

Technicians enter field data using an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) on an scheduled or ad hoc basis. The full functionality of M2M’s iSCADA® service is available to the user once the data has been uploaded via a secure and authenticated Internet link.
